Skype Plans Voicemail-to-Text Service

Users will fork over 25 cents per message

Share

(Newser) – Internet-telephone firm Skype will offer a service that converts voice messages into texts in any one of four languages, the company plans to announce today. But at 25 cents per text message—and with long voicemails running up to three texts—users’ costs could add up. And if a poor signal garbles the voicemail and it can't be converted, users will still get charged, CNET reports.

Skype is set to announce the service tomorrow.

I used the Callwave Voicemail to text service for a while. Although it is a neat feature, it has some drawbacks. First - its going to cost you whether someone leaves a "This is so-and-so, call me back" or if someone leaves a detailed message. It also depends on how many voicemails you receive. This plan would be good for the light user, but for a heavy user it makes sense to go with a per-month fee instead of a per message fee. Then there is the whole problem with accuracy. Anyway, I hope Skype comes up with some flat rate plans for this! Reply
