Murder of first wife didn't worry her, pastor said

(Newser) – An Illinois man has killed his second wife after serving 13 years for killing his first, the Chicago Tribune reports. Richard Wiley, who gunned down Kathryn Wiley-Motes with a Civil War replica rifle this weekend, then murdered his 17-year-old stepson and turned the rifle on himself. Wiley-Motes married Wiley months after he got out of prison 9 years ago, dismissing concerns from the minister who married them.

"I have played out every scenario that I can possibly think of, and I think I can deal with it," Motes, a student pastor, had told the reverend before the wedding. Wiley-Motes was a secretary at a church Wiley attended since childhood. "Did she think she could help him?" the minister asked. "When you have that kind of pastoral spirit, let's face it, we're caregivers, we're helpers."

(NEWSER) - A little girl's body has been exhumed 54 years after her murder, by cops who now think they can nail the killer using new forensics techniques. Prime suspect Jack McCullough, a former neighbor of the 7-year-old girl, has already been extradited from Washington to Illinois to face charges. "We're confident we have the right person," said a police spokesman. The case got a boost last year when McCullough's ex-girlfriend found a train ticket hidden behind a photo, notes ABC News . (NEWSER) - California police believe they've found another case of a family wiped out in a murder-suicide—the second such tragedy in eight days, reports the AP . The discovery of the body of a man who apparently leaped to his death from a highway overpass near San Diego led investigators to a home where the corpses of his lover and her two young children were found. Now the state of Illinois wants that money—it's suing Hawkins to cover the cost of his prison stay, the Chicago Tribune reports.
