MLB Suspends Perez for 80 More Games

Posted Aug 4, 07 6:50 AM CDT in Sports

(Newser) – Major League Baseball put the brakes on Detroit Tigers infielder Neifi Perez today, saying he couldn’t return from a drug suspension because he had failed his third stimulant test. The penalty, sitting out 80 more games, finishes his season. His second suspension of 25 games was slated to end after Detroit's game against the ChiSox last night.

Perez argues that team doctors told him the stimulant was fine. He also claims double jeopardy: the third test, he says, occurred before he was penalized for the second. Batting only .172 with one homer in 64 at-bats this season, the former Gold Glove shortstop will miss the last 54 games of the season and finish his suspension next year, if a team agrees to sign the 34-year-old.
