Pastor Killed in Ill. Church Shooting

Three others injured, including suspect

Share

(AP) – Illinois state police say a man shot a pastor to death and injured others at a church during a service in Maryville. Master Trooper Ralph Timmins says the man walked down the aisle during the early Sunday service at First Baptist Church in Maryville, exchanged words with pastor Fred Winters, and then pulled out a .45-caliber handgun.

Timmins said the man fatally shot Winters once before the gun jammed, then pulled out a knife and wounded himself. Churchgoers tried to subdue the attacker and two of them suffered minor injuries. Officials don't know if Winters and the suspect know each other. Maryville is about 20 miles northeast of St. Louis.

A car can be used by responsible people to travel from place to place. A handgun has no other function than causing injury or death. It's an intrinsic part of the design. I have no problem with guns specifically designed for hunting as a means of getting food. To me, this is a perfectly respectable reason to own a gun. I believe we have progressed enough as a nation that the right to bear arms for the protection of our livelihood is an outdated concept. If you disagree, thats fine. Shoot me, for all I care. Reply

"A handgun has no other function than causing injury or death."Yes, and when used by responsible people can be an effective means of self protection. There are some people out there who would rather be raped and or killed rather than use deadly force on an attacker. That's fine, that's their choice. But I have a right to effective self defense, and you not being willing to use a firearm in that capacity should not prevent me from exercising my right to do so. It's like the people who want to get rid of the privacy laws, because they don't feel they "have anything to hide". Fine, if you want to have your personal life on display, go ahead. But don't advocate the dissolution of my right to privacy. Same with any other right we enjoy.
