(Newser) – The Rihanna-Chris Brown saga provides an important “teachable moment” for kids, USA Today reports. One in four teen relationships involves violence and this highly visible case is bringing awareness to those who thought “it can’t happen" to me—especially after a photo of Rihanna's battered face was leaked, says the director of a violence prevention center.

“If he can do it—and if he can do it to somebody who is as sweet and as pretty as Rihanna—whoa! What does that mean for me and the guys I know?” said a columnist who studied the police affidavit with her daughters and then quizzed them on it. “Even I used to look at him and say, ‘That's the kind of guy, girls, you look for.’ In the kids’ world, he is like the dream guy.”

Many kids who originally tried to justify Chris Brown's behavior toward Rihanna changed their tune after the photo of the battered singer was released, USA Today reports.

A lot of kids were saying, 'I thought maybe he just slapped her. I thought he just pushed her.' There is a lot of denial and disbelief still out there, but we've seen a bit of a shift since the photo. - Patti Giggans, executive director of Peace Over Violence, on the leaked Rihanna photo

Why I don't condone the conduct of Brown, as he had no right to strike Rihanna, I am perplexed why the media has gone strictly after Brown, (most likely because Rihanna abuse is so visibile). Rihanna is not a poster child for abused women, the relatuionship she had with Brown was violatile prior to the incident, and the report states she struck Brown upon reading the text message. In a perfect wold, both Brown and Rihanna would have been arrested for assualt.

Seconded! The media has forgiven this idiot of a guy far to easily. What happened is despicable, and would still be considered so even if the roles were reversed. This is a wake-up call of: Hello, this is what NOT to do in an abusive relationship. Do not take them back, do not forgive them. Love is blind.

He will do it again and one of these times, she will not recover. If she does not care enough about herself, she should think about the millions of fans who look to her as a role model. This guy does not love her, he wants full control here. He has already won...It will be his way or no way at all.
