Defying reports that publishers are in the poorhouse, Audrey Niffenegger, author of the huge bestseller, The Time Traveler’s Wife, has received a nearly $5 million advance for a new novel, Her Fearful Symmetry, the New York Times reports. Her agent said the whopping payout from Scribner, a unit of Simon & Schuster, is for a manuscript that's already complete.

“She really has defied custom and written a spectacular second novel,” said the editor in chief at Scribner, which will release the supernatural tale of two sisters and a London cemetery in September. “She’s not selling it essentially on the success of her first book.” Niffenegger would have preferred to stay with her original publisher, MacAdam/Cage, but “it was just too big a gulf,” her agent said.
