Man responsible for rise in sectarian warfare

(Newser) – US forces claim they've killed local al-Qaeda leader Haitham al-Badri, the man widely considered responsible for the devastating repeat bombings of the Golden Mosque in Samarra. An Army spokesman says officials have ID'd al-Badri among the dead in a helicopter attack in Baghdad.

The 2006 and 2007 bombings of the major Shia shrine destroyed its ancient golden dome and minarets, and lead to a dramatic escalation in sectarian violence that had previously been cooling. Meanwhile, an attack at a gas station in eastern Baghdad killed 11 Iraqis lining up for fuel.

(AP) - A wave of bombings targeting Shiites in Iraq killed 72 people today, deepening sectarian tensions that exploded just after the last American troops left the country in mid-December. The bombings began early in the morning when explosions struck two Shiite neighborhoods in Baghdad, killing at least 27 people. A few hours later, a suicide attack hit Shiite pilgrims heading to the holy Shiite city of Karbala, killing 45; those explosions took place about 200 miles southeast of Baghdad. More»

(NEWSER) - A bomb killed nine and wounded more than 100 in an Iranian mosque today, scattering members of an extremist Shiite group, the BBC reports. (NEWSER) - The Askariya mosque, a Shiite shrine whose bombing ignited sectarian violence last year, was attacked again this morning, destroying the minarets left standing after its Golden Dome was shattered earlier. Suspected suicide bomber was bodyguard of Sunni MP

(NEWSER) - Eight people, including three lawmakers, were killed and at least 30 wounded when a suicide bomber eluded the normally heavy security around the Green Zone and denonated an explosion in the cafeteria of the Iraqi parliament. Officials believe the culprit was the bodyguard of a Sunni legislator not among the dead. The bomb squad defused two other satchel bombs found inside the building. More»
