Steele Backs Off Remarks on Abortion

(Newser) – Michael Steele has again stirred up some trouble with his Republican constituency, this time by making an intricate but obtuse argument about his stance on abortion, the Washington Post reports. In an interview with GQ, the RNC chair was asked if he supported a woman’s right to choose. “I think that's an individual choice,” he said, before quickly clarifying. “The states should make that choice.”

“That's what the choice is,” Steele continued. “The individual choice rests in the states. Let them decide.” A letter distributed by the RNC today clarified his position further. “I am pro-life, always have been, always will be,” Steele writes. “I tried to present why I am pro life while recognizing that my mother had a 'choice' before deciding to put me up for adoption. I thank her every day for supporting life.”

He assured me as chairman his views did not matter and that he would be upholding and promoting the Party platform. It is very difficult to reconcile the GQ interview with the chairman's pledge. - Tom Perkins, Family Research Council

The ususal flip-flopping of Republicans on this issue. There party is out of touch with the American majority on this and they know it. So to keep their narrow-minded radical right happy they have to tap dance around the issue. The majority of Americans support Roe and that is a fact.

55% for / 43% against women's right to choose in the latest polling Kansas1946 but the 43 are vocal and the 55 are a split ticket on constraints, particularly late term abortion. It's a very personal and complicated issue which is why many are against abortion personally but agree with a woman's right to choose within humane limitations. The GOP's black and white stance here is really hurting them.
