Common baby shampoos and lotions contain trace amounts of two carcinogens, a public safety group says. Big-name products such as Johnson & Johnson shampoo and Baby Magic lotion tested positive for the cancer-causing chemicals, apparently produced as byproducts during the manufacturing process, reports the Washington Post. Johnson & Johnson insisted that its products are safe and meet FDA regulations.

"Our intention is not to alarm parents but to inform parents that products that claim to be gentle and pure are contaminated with carcinogens, which is completely unnecessary," said a spokeswoman for the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, which wants tougher FDA rules. The chemicals found are 1,4 dioxane and formaldehyde. The CSC "misrepresented the overwhelming consensus of scientists," says Johnson & Johnson. (More formaldehyde stories.)
