(Newser) – The owner of a Manhattan topless joint has hired a civil rights attorney to block proposed taxes aimed at establishments like his by arguing that the raunchy dances are protected as free speech. A Bronx lawmaker is proposing to impose a $10 tax on patrons of the city's hundreds of "mammary meccas," as the New York Post so delicately puts it.

"It's entertainment and it's guaranteed under the First Amendment," said the topless operator. The politician "needs to take a course that covers the US Constitution."

(NEWSER) - A Manhattan lawyer has reported to police that she was raped by the son of New York City Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, reports the New York Daily News . The woman had drinks with Greg Kelly, 43, at the South Street Seaport last October, she told police. She then invited him to her lower Manhattan office, where she says he raped her. Greg Kelly's lawyer has denied the accusation. “Mr. Kelly strenuously denies any wrongdoing of any kind, and is cooperating fully with the district attorney’s investigation," he said. More»

4 Die in Separate NYC Subway Accidents

4 men killed in 24-hour period

(NEWSER) - Four men were killed in four separate New York City subway accidents in a single 24-hour period over the weekend. Two of the men were stuck by trains in Manhattan and Brooklyn, and a third was killed when he was crushed between a train and the platform in the Village, reports the New York Post . He had two guns, including semiautomatic, say police

(NEWSER) - Cops busting a suspected fare beater at a midtown Manhattan subway station made an unusual discovery: The guy was packing a loaded semiautomatic pistol. South Carolina resident Reggie Allen, sporting a "me against the world tattoo" on his neck, had an Intratec Luger Tec-9 gun with 34 bullets, extra ammo in his backpack, plus a loaded .45-caliber Smith and Wesson tucked into his waistband, say cops.
