NAACP Accuses Banks of Loan Discrimination

Blacks were forced into subprime mortgages, group says

Share

(AP) – The NAACP is accusing Wells Fargo and HSBC of forcing black people into subprime mortgages while whites with identical qualifications got lower rates. Class-action lawsuits were to be filed against the banks today in federal court in Los Angeles. Similar NAACP lawsuits are pending against a dozen other subprime lenders. "This is systematic, institutionalized racism," said an NAACP lawyer.

"Once you take out factors relative to income and credit risk, the only difference between the borrowers is the color of their skin," he said. Black homebuyers have been 3 1/2 times more likely to receive a subprime loan than white borrowers, and six times more likely to get a subprime rate when refinancing, the NAACP says. Blacks were disproportionately steered into subprime loans when their credit scores, income, and down payment were equal to those of white homebuyers.

But one of my fellow white folks, an angry guy in a comfortable all-white cul de sac, told me racism is a thing of the past -- so how can this be?? Reply

Oh this is rich. Forcing the market to make loans to people that can not pay (not mentioning race) is what got us into to some of this trouble. Whatever, back in my Alice in Obamaland hole. Reply

"people [who cannot] pay" has nothing to do with whites getting lower rates than equally-qualified blacks... (Back to your fantasyland indeed, CuteLilRoger; back to stockpiling ammo.)

racism is annoying and so are those who perpetuate it. Both sides. whites hating blacks, blacks hating whites, blacks complaining about whites, whites complaining about blacks. mexicans. we're all people and it seems like we still live in the stone age if we can't look past body makeup. Reply
