Guv abolishes executions after wrestling with conscience

(Newser) – New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson has signed a bill abolishing the state's death penalty, reports the Santa Fe New Mexican. Richardson, who formerly supported capital punishment, said replacing execution with life in prison without the possibility of parole was “the most difficult decision of his political life.” He noted that 130 death-row prisoners have been exonerated in the last decade, four of them in New Mexico.

“I do not have confidence in the criminal justice system as it currently operates to be the final arbiter when it comes to who lives and who dies for their crime," said Richardson. His state becomes only the second to ban executions since the Supreme Court reinstated capital punishment in 1976. The move will not affect the sentences of the two prisoners currently on death row.

I wonder who here is the most stung. Poor mad, has to flail around when he get walloped in one corner and then go to another so no one can see his shame. It’s ok, cow boy, I’ll be more than happy to take you on. Just try to stay in one place instead of leaving your little insults scattered like tiny Easter eggs. Fun to find but I just don’t want to miss any.

(NEWSER) - The number of death sentences handed down this year dropped 30% compared to last, hitting the lowest level in 35 years, according to a new report. Just 78 people were sentenced to death this year—marking "the first time we've had fewer than 100 new death sentences in a year in the modern era of capital punishment," says the executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center, the nonprofit behind the report. (NEWSER) - By week's end, it will become even more difficult for the US to get its hands on a key drug used in lethal injections. Early this year, an Illinois firm stopped making thiopental. "It is time for Oregon to consider a different approach,” the Democrat said at a news conference. “I refuse to be a part of this compromised and inequitable system any longer; and I will not allow further executions while I am governor."
