Obamas Planting Veggie Garden at White House

(Newser) – The Obamas are planting a vegetable garden at the White House, the Washington Post reports. And not just any garden—it will have 55 different vegetables, including the one that vexed candidate Obama: arugula. Michelle will break ground tomorrow with local students, and chefs will use its bounty to feed the first family and visiting dignitaries. The president, she told the New York Times, will be enlisted to pull weeds.

The vegetable garden is the first since Eleanor Roosevelt's victory garden in World War II, and the fist lady says she hopes it will help teach the value of healthful eating. "My hope is that through children, they will begin to educate their families and that will, in turn, begin to educate our communities,” she said. The 1,100-square-foot garden will be visible from the street, near the girls' swing set.

The power of Michelle Obama and the garden can create a very powerful message about eating healthy and more delicious food. I don’t think it’s a stretch to say it could translate into real change.

I hope Michelle cultivates a fabulous watermelon patch. I think that would be most fitting. Kind of the same way I would expect GWB to cultivate a nice hops crop. :-)
