Smuggler Makes Dishes From Cocaine

42-piece set includes cups, plates, saucers, and 20kg of drugs

(Newser) – Spanish police have seized a 42-piece crockery set—complete with cups, plates, bowls, you name it—that happens to be made entirely of cocaine, the Times of London reports. Police say a smuggler got nabbed trying to sneak the bogus dishware from Venezuela to Catalonia, by way of London. It's the latest trend in drug smuggling, apparently—using a compressed version of the drug to make stuff.

(NEWSER) - Cocaine is "Europe's stimulant of choice," according to a new study that says nearly five million Europeans used coke this year—a million more than last. The Spanish and British used it most, BBC reports, but Danes and Italians increased their usage most in 2007. Two million Europeans used the drug overall in the last month. (NEWSER) - New hope in the treatment of addiction? A study shows that people hooked on drugs or alcohol have abnormalities in the brain that make them more susceptible. Researchers were able to determine that the abnormalities existed before the addiction set in because they found the same abnormalities in the brains of non-addicted siblings, reports Reuters . (NEWSER) - The New York Times last month revealed that undercover US agents have laundered and smuggled millions of dollars for Mexico's drug cartels—and today the paper shines a light on one such operation, in which federal agents helped one drug trafficker and his Colombian supplier move cash and cocaine across international borders. Over a period of months in 2007, US and Mexican agents worked with that supplier—Harold Mauricio Poveda-Ortega, aka "The Rabbit"—who fed cocaine to cartel leader Arturo Beltran Levya, the New York Times reports.
