A man who recently killed himself after apparently abducting a 5-year-old girl was in the Portuguese Algarve when Madeleine McCann disappeared from a hotel there. Police are continuing the hunt for the other girl, who the Times reports looked remarkably similar to Maddy, but hint that this may be the break in the sensational 96-day-old case.

Urs Hans Von Aesch, 67, drove a white van similar to one spotted in the area when Maddy was kidnapped. Von Aesch shot himself a week ago in a Swiss forest; 20 miles away, investigators discovered a backpack filled with the clothing the Swiss girl was wearing when she was last seen. Cops are also testing blood samples discovered in the Algarve room where Maddy was staying. (More Madeleine McCann stories.)
