A California peace activist lies critically injured in a hospital after he was struck in the head by an Israeli tear-gas canister—and his distraught parents are demanding an explanation, reports the Independent. Tristan Anderson, 38, was struck during an Arab-Jewish peace demonstration in the West Bank village of Ni'lin over a week ago. Witnesses say the canister was fired directly at Anderson from close range as he was standing in the center of the group.

"We want the Israeli government to publicly take full responsibility for the shooting of our son," said Anderson's mom, who was at her son's beside in Israel. Anderson has undergone three brain surgeries in an attempt to repair multiple skull fractures and a collapsed eye socket. It was his first time in Israel. (More tear gas stories.)
