Schilling Returns From DL, Loses

Posted Aug 7, 07 7:09 AM CDT in Sports

(Newser) – In Curt Schilling's first start since a stint on the DL, the righty gave up four runs in six frames, including a go-ahead solo shot by the 5'8", 165-pound Maicer Izturis. It was Izturis's third home run of the year. Schilling's opposite number, Jered Weaver, yielded only Kevin Youkilis's two-run shot in the third, and the bullpen preserved the 4-2 win.

The Halos got their insurance run on a rare play in which rookie Jeff Mathis bolted home from third on a sacrifice fly that had not been caught yet; left fielder Brandon Moss had bobbled the ball, but the umpire ruled that the runner could leave on initial contact. Moss replaced Manny Ramirez after the mercurial slugger was ejected.
