(Newser) – Pro-legalization activists stuffed the ballot box with questions about marijuana when the White House solicited questions for today’s online town-hall meeting, and President Obama went out of his way to address the issue, the Los Angeles Times reports. “I don’t know what this says about the online audience,” he joked, but then got serious: “The answer is no, I don’t think that is a good strategy to grow our economy.”

President Barack Obama reads a question submitted via the Internet as he holds an Open For Questions town hall style meeting in the East Room of the White House in Washington, Thursday, March 26, 2009. It was the first online town hall done in the White House.

Taken from The Budgetary Implications of Marijuana Prohibition -replacing prohibition with a system of taxation and regulation -- would save $7.7 billion per year in state and federal expenditures on prohibition enforcement and produce tax revenues of at least $2.4 billion annually if marijuana were taxed like most consumer goods. If, however, marijuana were taxed similarly to alcohol or tobacco, it might generate as much as $6.2 billion annually. Do the math. Oh, and more people are killed by allergic reactions to peanuts than marijuana.

Did he elucidate at all, or just "NO?" It's folly to think that some of our Mexican problems can't at least be alleviated by legalizing marijuana in the States.
