Witnesses in the Amanda Knox trial testified today that they heard screams and the sound of multiple people fleeing the scene the night of Meredith Kercher’s murder, ABC News reports. An elderly woman who lives near the crime scene said she heard a scream that “made my skin crawl,” followed by at least two sets of footsteps running away. Another witness said she heard a man and a woman arguing, then a scream.

A third witness testified to hearing people running away from the house. The defense quickly moved to discredit the witnesses. The elderly woman could not pin down the date of the incident under questioning, though she swore it was the night before she learned of the murder. The other two witnesses, like a shopkeeper who testified last week and refuted Knox’s alibi, did not come forward until a year after the murder, the Times of London reports.
