Prison Crew Helps Toddler Lost on Highway

Share

(Newser) – Inmates in a Maryland road crew helped care for a toddler who wandered down a freeway yesterday when his family forgot about him, the Frederick News-Post reports. A trucking company owner first spotted the 2 1/2-year-old boy running on the center lines of Route 550 as gravel trucks drove by. "I thought it was a small animal," said Paul Kilcoyne, who ran out and grabbed the child.

To keep him off the road, Department of Corrections officers and inmates took the boy in their van, feeding him chips and high-fiving him while Maryland state troopers found the boy's house about 300 yards away. The boy's father thought his 18-year-old daughter was still babysitting him. "It was a miscommunication by family members," said a trooper. Child Protective Services is investigating, but no charges have been filed.

FTA: "The boy's father thought his 18-year-old daughter was still babysitting him. " Might help to read the article next time.
