HHS Nominee Sebelius Pays $7K in Back Taxes

She's latest Cabinet pick with IRS trouble

(AP) – See if this sounds familiar: Health and Human Services nominee Kathleen Sebelius has corrected three years worth of tax returns after finding "unintentional errors." In a letter to senators, Sebelius said the changes involved charitable contributions, the sale of a home, and business expenses. She and her husband paid a total of $7,040 in back taxes and $878 in interest from 2005-2007.

Several Obama administration nominees have been derailed by tax issues, notably the president's first nominee for HHS secretary, Tom Daschle. Sebelius is to appear Thursday before the Senate's Financial Committee, which will vote on sending her nomination to the full Senate. Committee chief Max Baucus issued a late statement of support for Sebelius today. "She's the right person for the job," he said.

A sales tax replacement shifts more of the tax burden on lower income people, who spend a greater percentage of their income than the wealthy.

funny, I have been doing my own taxes for quite a while until recently, when I had to juggle W2, and 1099, and itemize for two self employed businesses.....I was NEVER EVER late or left with back taxes......Just another tax cheat, good at programs to pay out our taxes but not at paying her own

Agreed. (Except for Geithner, if you run the IRS you should be able to file taxes correctly). Odd idea, but what do you think would take place if we shifted the income tax burden to an estate and sales tax?
