HHS Nominee Sebelius Pays $7K in Back Taxes

She's latest Cabinet pick with IRS trouble

Share

(AP) – See if this sounds familiar: Health and Human Services nominee Kathleen Sebelius has corrected three years worth of tax returns after finding "unintentional errors." In a letter to senators, Sebelius said the changes involved charitable contributions, the sale of a home, and business expenses. She and her husband paid a total of $7,040 in back taxes and $878 in interest from 2005-2007.

Several Obama administration nominees have been derailed by tax issues, notably the president's first nominee for HHS secretary, Tom Daschle. Sebelius is to appear Thursday before the Senate's Financial Committee, which will vote on sending her nomination to the full Senate. Committee chief Max Baucus issued a late statement of support for Sebelius today. "She's the right person for the job," he said.

Are the tax codes too complex yet?

This is funny, because when she was first considered I jested that she must have tax problems in order to be qualified. The amount is almost insignificant, but seriously...wtf? After so many others drop out because of tax issues, you still don't check for them? Reply

The US tax code is a wreck and needs serious reform...These people are (probably) not trying to game the system, but the code is so convoluted and virtually incomprehensible that even, intelligent, educated, and well-meaning people are prone to make theses kinds of errors...I speak from experience as I deal with my much simpler return... Agreed. (Except for Geithner, if you run the IRS you should be able to file taxes correctly). Odd idea, but what do you think would take place if we shifted the income tax burden to an estate and sales tax?
