Strapped Californians Pan Like It's 1849

Soaring gold prices and a lousy economy have many hoping to strike it rich

(Newser) – The miserable state economy and the soaring price of gold have sent Californians back into them thar hills, USA Today reports. Prospecting clubs all over the state report a huge jump in the number of people panning for gold just as a 10.5% unemployment rate has left cash-strapped residents with free time on their hands.

As with the 1849 gold rush, those who supply the eager prospectors are generally the ones making the most money. Most panners only bring home tiny pieces of gold. Those who do strike it rich tend to avoid bragging about it and revealing the location.

I have no illusions of grandeur, that I'm going to strike it rich. It's a good excuse to get out of the house.
- Marc Montelius, 50, of Whittier, Calif.

During the Depression, it was the same thing. With a little gold you could afford beans and have the wherewithal to make it through. - Martin Milas, president of the Prospectors Club of Southern California

I lived in California for 4 years, and have witnessed the same thing. Rampant crime in addition to the population explosion, makes me glad to have left...I do miss the beaches and the water, and the overall culture there though, just not the packed urban island it was turning into

When I lived in California (10 yrs.) it was the mecca for people looking for a job. The population is crushing under its own numbers & illegal immigration. Global warming might make its future even more grim. So sad.
