Norman Beats Odds, Returns to Augusta

(Newser) – Greg Norman is surprised to be returning to the Masters at 54, and even though the Shark says he's “going in there with low expectations,” he’ll still play to win, Golf Digest reports. Chief among his worries is pacing himself on the new, lengthier course—“a monster,” he calls it. “I've got a lot of good memories and a lot of bad memories, keeping myself in check will be the hardest thing.”

Norman, whose surprise third-place finish at the British Open last year—“I was on honeymoon”—got him an invite to Augusta, is apprehensive about returning but savors the chance. “I've got to find out how much longer this golf course is. They say on the back nine, there are no more cheers and roars and excitement back there anymore,” he said. “But who knows? Augusta is Augusta.”

To make the cut, I'd love to be able to do that. I don't know how long this course is. If it's wet and cold that's going to work against me. When you're 54 and the conditions are wet and cold, its different than when you're 24. - Greg Norman
