US Kills 30 in Baghdad

Posted Aug 8, 07 5:21 PM CDT in World

(Newser) – The US killed 30 militants and detained another dozen in an overnight air strike on a military stronghold in a Shiite district of Baghdad. Witnesses counted women and children among the slain, though the US claims all 30 were insurgents linked to radical cleric Moqtada al-Sadr.

Last night's attack on Sadr City targeted members of the Mahdi Army, an group that has been accused of smuggling weapons from Iran. The strike came as PM al-Maliki met with Iranian officials to discuss bolstering security—and on the eve of a major Shia pilgrimage, which has angered the local Shiite population.
