The Malawi judge in Madonna’s adoption case says she fought “a gripping temptation to throw caution to the wind,” and let the pop star take Chifundo James to improve the child's life, CNN reports. But she said larger concerns about child trafficking took precedence. “Anyone could come to Malawi and quickly arrange for an adoption that might have grave consequences,” she said.

Malawi law requires that people live in the country for a time before adopting, in an effort to protect children from child traffickers. The judge said she considered this case different from Madonna’s previous adoption, because an orphanage was willing to care for Chifundo. (More Malawi stories.)
