Scientists Ready Biggest Tornado Chase Ever

50+ researchers to go on monthlong twister hunt across middle US

Share

(Newser) – Researchers from 19 universities in four countries are preparing for a massive $10.5 million tornado chase, LiveScience reports. The project, dubbed VORTEX2 (Verification Of Rotation in Tornadoes Experiment), will send 50 scientists in 40 research vehicles chasing super-cell thunderstorms, which tend to generate the nastiest tornadoes, across South Dakota, Iowa, Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, and Texas.

Though scientists know the basics about tornadoes, much about them remains a mystery, including exactly what conditions they develop in and what happens inside of them. The first VORTEX project revealed that the tornadoes happened “on smaller time and space scales than scientists thought,” says one researcher. VORTEX2 aims to craft a better understanding of why twisters form, and how to predict them.

Let's just take the $10.5 Mil and buy everyone in tornado alley a solid steel safe-room instead and actually do something constructive about the loss of life every season. Reply

You know nothing about construction costs....$10M would, at best buy 1,000 of the "Safe rooms" that you claim would address this problem...Whereas research might allow for greater advanced warning would save more lives than your ridiculous "solution" could possible do....If you know nothing about the topic at hand, please keep your nonsensical comments to yourself......

Last year we installed an in-ground shelter in our garage (www.flatsafe.com) for about $4K. So $10.5M would get you 2625 units without a volume discount... around 3K units with a discount. The research is still a much better deal.
