(Newser) – A man shot dead his wife, teenage daughter, and two members of his wife's family before taking his own life in northern Alabama, AP reports. The man's body was found yesterday near his home, which had been burned to the ground. His divorce trial was due to start today and investigators believe his wife's relatives may have been on the witness list.

He used some type of accelerant that caused the home to burn very, very quickly, then walked about 200 yards back into a wooded area behind the house and took his life. - Michael Corley, chief deputy in Morgan County, Alabama

Which is precisely why you do not become an enabler of mass murder, albeit from the manufacture, distribution and sale of instruments of human slaughter. When have you read in the Guardian, "Bromley youth stabs and kills 14 before stabbing self to death." There are always exceptions to a government's constitution and ancillary documents. They are living documents, subject to change when it is in the best interests of the ongoing concern of the nation. The fact that we've modified ours over time sets the precedent for that. Besides which, the 2nd amendment has been drastically misinterpreted in order for gun loving dunderheads to justify their position.

I think this has more to do with people losing everything in the economy than gun ownership. I was reading in the London papers how they are having a huge problem with knife violence. Kids are taking steak knives to school and stabbing people. While I am to the left on most issues I support the bill of rights. All ten. No exceptions.

When the individual or group can no longer self-regulate, it is not only the right but also the responsibility of government to step in and regulate in order to preserve the overall health and welfare of its citizens. This is why we have smoking bans in public places. This is also why drugs are illegal. Sure, I'm willing to bet 10-25% of people wanting to use drugs would do so responsibly and not place themselves or others at harm. However, it is that other 75-90% who time and time again, "ruin it for the rest of us". There's no reason why guns fall outside of this reasoning.
