Neverland Auction: Weirdest Yardsale Ever

(Newser) – A big, plastic motorized baby lies in its cradle, waving its limbs. Its fingers are missing. “That is just creepy,” remarks an onlooker, one of many milling about this abandoned Beverly Hills mall. Decked out with red carpets like an award show, it’s currently exhibiting a host of items to be auctioned off from Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch, the Washington Post reports. And the baby is just the tip of the iceberg.

There’s the traditional memorabilia from Jackson’s career—his awards, platinum albums, and huge array of costumes—but there’s also a huge quantity of toys and oddities. Bronze garden statues of children and cherubs, a gigantic, talking, Lego Darth Vader, a golf cart with Jackson painted on the hood—as Peter Pan. “What is unusual,” says the auctioneer, “is what a pack rat he was.”

Michael Jackson Fans Sue His Doctor

French fans seek compensation for 'emotional damage'

(NEWSER) - Michael Jackson fans in France are suing the late pop singer's doctor over emotional distress, AFP reports. "It's similar to losing a childhood friend in a traffic accident," says lawyer Emmanuel Ludot, who is representing about 100 grieving fans against doctor Conrad Murray. "Because this death affects you, you have the possibility to file a suit and seek compensation." More»

Rare Audubon Edition Could Fetch $10M

First edition to be sold at auction

(NEWSER) - A rare first edition of John James Audubon's The Birds of America could fetch anywhere from $7 million to $10 million at auction, Christie's estimates. The auction house will sell the lavishly illustrated four-volume set, featuring more than 400 hand-colored plates, on Jan. 20 in New York. The 3½-foot-tall volumes, which show birds at their actual size, will be displayed at Christie's Rockefeller Center galleries Jan. 14-19, the AP reports. More»

Thousands of Titanic Artifacts Set for Auction

(NEWSER) - Titanic enthusiasts will soon have a chance to get their hands on a piece—or more accurately, 5,500 pieces—of history. The owner of the biggest collection of artifacts from the ship is preparing to sell the $189 million worth of items next year, the 100th anniversary of the ship's sinking, the AP reports. Among the rescued objects are fine china and pieces of the ship itself. But following a judge's ruling, the items can't be sold separately: The collection is going as a unit. More»
