Obama Calls For 'New Beginning' With Cuba

(Newser) – Adding warm words to the ongoing thaw in US-Cuba relations, President Obama said today he sought "a new beginning" with the island's communist regime, the Los Angeles Times reports. Obama spoke after arriving at the Summit of the Americas in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. "I am prepared to have my administration engage with the Cuban government on a wide range of issues," he said.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton also responded to Cuban President Raul Castro's offer to engage in talks, saying Washington had "failed" in its policy toward Cuba and was "taking a very serious look at how to respond," the BBC reports. Cuba is banned from the summit, because its leaders are not democratically elected, but some Latin American leaders say they want the island nation readmitted.

I sure hope Clinton and Obama don't make the foolish mistake of ending the trade embargo against Cuba. We need to give it time to work. It's only been around 50 years since it was imposed. It could start working any time now.

sometimes it's hard to tell if politicians like GWB really believe their own bull shit, or if they are just pandering. I think GWB is the former, were as some of his handler, like Carl Rove are the latter.

I just figured it out... looking at that wonderful, human smile on the face of the truly great man who, like Abraham Lincoln, made himself our leader through the sheer force of his will and intelligence. That kind, loving, human smile made me finally understand the source of the visceral un-Christian antipathy i felt for GWB from the get-go, before he was the governor of Texas, before the stolen election, before I really knew much about him other than his patrician parentage and lack of any significant accomplishments of his own. It was always there for all to see. He didn’t— couldn’t-- like himself. He was never even for one moment, I’m convinced, genuinely comfortable in his own skin. How could so many have failed to sense that deep seated sense of self-loathing and lack of self respect? Never do I recall seeing in all those years a photo in which he displayed anything like a simple unselfconscious human smile.
