Cincy's Irons Will Miss Rookie Season

(Newser) – Cincinnati rookie tailback Kenny Irons tore his left ACL in Thursday's preseason opener and will go on IR, ending his first pro season before it even starts. The Auburn product had been a hit in practice and was expected to add game-breaking speed and big-play potential to the running game. He'll return for minicamp in 2008, the team said.

Irons, the Bengals' second-round draft pick and the 49th pick overall, was expected to complement halfback Rudi Johnson as Chris Perry rehabs from ankle surgery, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Irons limped off the field in the second quarter and yesterday underwent an MRI that revealed the tear. Adding insult to injury, Cincy lost to the Lions, 27-26.
