Senate Panel Clears Sebelius for HHS Post

Vote means Obama is likely to have a full Cabinet soon

Share

(Newser) – It looks like President Obama will finally get his full Cabinet. A Senate panel today approved his pick of Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius to be director of Health and Human Services, the Hill reports. The vote, largely along party lines, all but assures that Sebelius will be approved by the full Senate despite lingering GOP opposition.

Sebelius ran into trouble over back taxes and ties to a late-term abortion doctor in Kansas who has been a longtime donor. Sebelius initially failed to disclose all those donations before correcting what she called an oversight. Finance Committee chief Max Baucus said he will push for a quick vote in the full Senate so Sebelius can get to work on health reform.

Personally, Clint Eastwood taught me to never trust a Kansas Red Leg... It's a lesson indelibly etched into my tiny brain. Reply

I thought Tom Daschle was an excellent pick for that post. It's a shame that all this anti-washington insider, ant-lobbyist bullshit subverted his nomination. Reply

An accountant will likely be director of Health and Human Services... Accountants understand one thing, and one thing only... how to cut costs to show a savings. A director of Health and Human Services needs many other qualities to assure balanced savings through superior performance while cutting useless bureaucratic budget-sapping fat, while assuring that our sick and elderly receive top quality care and humane consideration. A government is judged by the way it cares for its ill and elderly. Reply
