As Staffers Take Pay Cuts, NYT Execs Get Bonuses

CEO's pay went up $1.5M last year

(Newser) – New York Times Co. executives have taken big bonuses as their newsrooms endure layoffs and pay cuts, a proxy statement filed with the SEC reveals. At the eye of the storm is CEO Janet Robinson, whose compensation in 2008 was more than $1 million greater than her 2007 salary and bonuses, the Huffington Post reports. "What are they being rewarded for?" asked a reporter at the Boston Globe, which the parent company has threatened to shutter.

Folks, it's not just Wall Street. The American workers of all ilk are being screwed-- in the compensation category-- by their own CEOs and Board of Directors. Corporate greed, seemingly, has no politics.

(NEWSER) - The New York Times website will start charging customers for unlimited access starting March 28, the newspaper announced . Users will be able to read up to 20 articles for free, but beyond that, they’ll have to pay $15 per month for full access to the site and mobile app. For $20, they’ll get site access and an iPad app, and for $35 they’ll get all of the above. (NEWSER) - This from Arthur Sulzberger Jr.: "We will stop printing the New York Times sometime in the future, date TBD." OK, "this sounds obvious," writes Henry Blodget at Business Insider , "but it's a big deal." Unless the paper finds a "sugar-daddy," it will surely have to downsize over time given the realities of online revenue. Blodget estimates the Times spends $200 million a year on its current newsroom, a figure that will likely be cut in half even if the coming paywall is "highly successful" with 1 million or so subscribers.
