Make Boyle the New Brown

Singer could get Britain out of cynical funk

(Newser) – Disenchanted Labour supporter Frank Skinner knows how the UK political party can turn things around: Make Susan Boyle the new party leader. Who would replace the Internet sensation on Britain’s Got Talent? Gordon Brown, of course. “The thing is I really want Mr. Brown to be Susan Boyle—not just in a talent contest but all the time,” Skinner writes in the Times of London.

“I want him to be gauche, unsophisticated and uncool, but have a beautiful inner being. That's what I used to think he was like,” he continues. As he lost his faith in the PM, Skinner found Boyle: “The Scottish accent, the eyebrows, the audience's derisive sniggers—it seemed to give me back the loveable Gordon I'd just lost.” Boyle just might be “our only hope” against “a growing national cynicism.”

It wouldn't take too much backcombing to turn Gordon Brown into a pretty convincing look-alike and, though I doubt his voice is as good as hers, I imagine it would be extremely poignant to watch him sing 'I Dreamed a Dream.' - Frank Skinner

The upshot of the comparison with Gordon Brown is that I haven't been able to enjoy Susan Boyle's success as much as others. Ever since she became a public figure, I've been waiting for her to be exposed. [But] it looks like Susan Boyle is the real deal. - Frank Skinner

She is decent and sincere and has a cat called Pebbles instead of a pitbull named Damian. Could she really be, as some have suggested, the antidote to a growing national cynicism? It's a big ask. My only hope—our only hope—is Susan Boyle. - Frank Skinner
