Derby Favorite I Want Revenge Is Scratched

(Newser) – Kentucky Derby favorite I Want Revenge has been scratched because of an ankle injury, reports Newsday. The 3-year-old colt—the morning line had him at 3-1 odds to win today's race—showed soreness in his left front ankle after an early workout, said trainer Jeff Mullins. "We could tell he wasn't 100 percent." The new favorites: Dunkirk and Pioneer of the Nile at 4-1, followed by Friesan Fire at 5-1, notes the Online Gambling Paper.

"We detected a trace of heat in the left front ankle," said Mullins, who doesn't think the horse will be ready for the Preakness, either. "With the weather and the track being pressed down because of all the rain, we didn't know how he would handle it with the surface being so hard. We just thought that in the best interests of the horse, we're not going to run."

(NEWSER) - Go figure: Horses wearing the numbers 9, 1, and 1 won the first three races at Belmont Park on the anniversary of 9/11, reports the New York Post . “The odds were probably about a million to one,” says the trainer at the stable that owns the first two winners. Not quite, notes the Post: The pick-three result paid $18.60 on a $2 wager, and a sizable number of people likely made the bet in honor of the day. Angry Bees Kill Horse

Fly repellent spray may have ticked them off

(NEWSER) - A horse was killed and his owner seriously hurt when swarms of angry bees attacked them in southern California yesterday. The man asked someone to check on his horse as he was being treated in a Riverside emergency room for numerous bee stings. Animal service workers were dispatched to the scene, and found the horse, felled by bee stings. Officers believe the owner may have triggered the attack by two nearby swarms when he sprayed his horse with fly repellent, reports the Los Angeles Times . "I'm imagining" the owner "was pretty lucky to get out of there alive," said one of the animal service officers on the scene. Exterminators were addressing the bee problem. More»

Barns damaged at home of Kentucky Derby

(NEWSER) - A tornado hit the home of the Kentucky Derby Wednesday night, damaging several barns and leaving horses running loose. No injuries to humans or horses were reported after the tornado at Louisville's Churchill Downs, reports the AP . The horses were corralled and no damage to the racetrack's iconic twin spires was reported. Thursday's race card has been canceled. More»

Animal Kingdom comes up short after late charge

(AP) - No Triple Crown again this year: Shackleford won today's Preakness Stakes at Pimlico. He fended off a late charge by Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom, who finished just a half-length behind, ahead of third-place finisher Astrology. Shackleford also ran in the Derby, but he finished fourth after leading most of that race. More»
