Flossie on Course for Hawaii

Posted Aug 14, 07 9:13 AM CDT in US

(Newser) – Hurricane Flossie is barreling towards Hawaii, expected to pass less than a hundred miles from the Big Island. The National Weather Service has declared a hurricane watch, and the governor has activated the National Guard. Schools have been shut down, and residents have been warned to stock up on food an water.

Meanwhile, a 5.3 earthquake struck the Big Island last night. No injuries were reported. Meteorologists warned that a change in winds could still take the hurricane closer than expected to land. "This is too close for comfort," says a National Guard general.
