Hawaiian hurricane will downgrade to tropical storm

(NEWSER) - Hawaiians have been told the Category 4 hurricane raging 875 miles off their southeast coast will probably downgrade to a tropical storm by the time it passes by land in two or three days. (AP) - A weakening Hurricane Bill spun northward today, churning up rough seas, creating dangerous rip tides and closing beaches to swimmers up and down the eastern seaboard, including President Obama's planned vacation spot, Martha's Vineyard. Expected to make landfall later today

(NEWSER) - Hurricane Gustav is expected to make landfall in Haiti later today, Bloomberg reports, buffeting a country already hard hit by Tropical Storm Fay earlier this month. Gustav was upgraded from a tropical storm earlier this morning, after strengthening over the Caribbean. The National Hurricane Center said that preparations should “be rushed to completion,” warning of possible “life-threatening flash floods and mud slides.” More»

(NEWSER) - Gabrielle made a relatively tame landfall—with top winds hitting the 50 mph mark—on North Carolina's coast today at 11:45am, reports CNN.
