(Newser) – A former US soldier convicted of raping and murdering a 14-year-old Iraqi girl and shooting dead her parents and baby sister told investigators that joining the army was the "worst decision I ever made," reports CNN. "I suppose you think I'm a monster," Steven Green told police who busted him, according to recently released court documents.

"All my buddies were getting killed. My lieutenant got his face blown off. George Bush and Dick Cheney ought to be the ones arrested," the former infantry private told detectives who arrested him at his grandmother's house in North Carolina. Green was convicted for the 2006 crime last week in a Kentucky court, and faces a possible death sentence this week. Four other former  soldiers have been sentenced to up to 110 years for participating in the crimes and coverup.

What he's saying is that he can't imagine ever being in a situation where it would have been possible for him to do such a thing if he had not been sent to Iraq. That kind of environment brings out the best and the worst in men. If you haven't lived through it you have very little basis for making a judgment.

With regard to the death penalty, I would allow convicted murderers of this kind and the guy who killed his daughter pregnant with his child to elect to end their own lives.

Oh really? And I suppose it was GW that raped that poor girl and her family, too? Give me a break! There is no excuse for such a sick demented act.
