Google Brings Online Chrome Ad to TV

With browser far behind competitors, innovator goes traditional

Share

(Newser) – In a desperate bid to heighten the visibility of its little-used web browser Chrome, Google has launched its first American television advertising campaign, the Guardian reports. The TV ad was made by a Google Japan team and uses stop-motion animation. Google says it’s “excited to see how this test goes and what impact television might have on creating more awareness of Google Chrome."

Though Google claims to be "one of the world's best known brands almost entirely through word of mouth," Chrome is the preferred browser of only 1.4% of Internet users—far behind competitors Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari. Google also hopes the ad campaign will raise the profile of its TV-advertising brokerage scheme.

Good. They need some setbacks to keep them in line. We don't need them to become the next Microsoft. Reply

Build a better browser, fellas- and not a crappy crashy LITE version of Firefox. If you have the best browser, you users will find it, as Mozilla's market share has indicated. Chrome is not bad for a first shot- jeez louise, ANYTHING's better than IE!- but you need to bring the goods before you get the users. Reply
