Washington Can't Take a Joke

Uproar over Sykes' routine shows we take things too literally

(Newser) – Sure, Wanda Sykes’ controversial jokes at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner were “over the top,” and they weren’t all that funny, writes Kathleen Parker in the Washington Post. But the uproar they sparked just shows “we take ourselves far too seriously—and literally.” Sykes is a comedian; of course she’s over the top. The brouhaha says more about us than it does about her.

“Washington buzz lately has become a buzz saw,” Parker writes: whether the president  “laughs, smiles, or frowns” is now a major political issue. “What dreary, sensitive wretches we've become,” with “our thin-skinned intolerance and our reflexive lurch to take offense,” she notes. “We might remind ourselves that it's always the fanatics who can't take a joke.”

You'd think from the scurrying of tiny feet that we were on the verge of appointing a Special Commission on Acceptable Humor. - Kathleen Parker

Again, the jokes are out there and considered ok because the victims belong to the "unprotected" groups. Can anyone think of a more "Unprotected" person than a conservative white Republican heterosexual male? On the flip side imagine any of those comments being directed against a liberal minority Democrat gay or lesbian?

I would have laughed louder if she had asked Obama to tell Rush to get rid of those "white man" drugs - Oxycontin - and try some of the good "brother" drugs like he used when he was a student at Columbia. Perhaps his dealer was still on the street - unless he was cleaned up and put into Obama's cabinet - they are all such crooks. then I would have laughed. My nephew's 32 year old wife is one of the living dead from Oxycon. She can't break it. Like Rush, she was given it by her doctor before we found out how dangerous it was. Wanda also lied about Rush's wish for Obama to fail...I too want his policies to fail. At present, we have to borrow 46 cents out of every dollar we spend - and our babies will be paying the bill all of their lives for today's spending. And, Obama is not finished spending yet.

Wishing death on people, now, there's some high humor. What? Wanda didn't have any "Republicans are really the KKK and are plotting to lynch the president" jokes? Not brave enough to spout that line of garbage "humor," eh? It would have gotten BIG laughs though by ALL the libs and media there.
