UK Weighs Limits on 'Binge Bars'

Brown calls time on drink promotions in effort to reduce rowdiness

(Newser) – British pubs that offer "all you can drink" promotions may soon find themselves banned from serving alcohol under tough new measures to curb binge drinking, the Independent reports. Gordon Brown declined to introduce a minimum drink price as some activists had called for, but the PM promised that the crackdown on promotions would help reduce the number of rowdy drunks plaguing city centers.

The government is committed to reducing alcohol-fueled crime and disorder. As such we have a duty to crack down on irresponsible promotions that fuel excessive drinking and can lead people into crime and disorder. - A British Home Office spokesman

The illegality of cannabis is very outrageous, an impediment to full utilization of a plant which helps produce the serenity and insight, sensitivity and fellowship so desperately needed in this increasingly *mad* and dangerous world - Carl Sagan (my blood brother, notice the 'dog whistle') Reply

Tens of years ago Britain showed an increase in drink driving with the increase of car ownership and so instituted tougher drink driving laws. It seems that Britain is now experiencing a rise in drunk and disorderly conduct and that maybe tougher laws for this are in order. Right now the fines run about 80 pounds, maybe increasing this and including a mandatory 24-48 hour jail time. This might bring home the point that it's okay to go out and have fun, but if you're going to drink yourself stupid and endanger yourself and others and cause the police trouble then it's going to cost you some time and money. You have to make the prospect of getting falling down drunk so negative that people decide not to do it while they are still sober. Granted you will always have the 5% rule, where 5% of any population is a waste of space and air and they will always get falling down drunk. So jail them and fine them. If they don't have the money they can always work 40-50 hours for the local council or local charity as they punishment. Reply
