Since her mother, brother, and nephew were murdered last year, Jennifer Hudson has relied on God for strength, People reports. “The thing that keeps me going is knowing God is in control. It’s like, if he placed me here then I must be prepared,” she told Essence magazine. Fiancé David Otunga helps too, adding, “She doesn’t have to worry about losing me. I’m always going to be right here.”

Otunga, who received Hudson’s mother’s blessing before proposing in September, added, “In this time when things seem so uncertain for her, there is certainty in our bond.” Hudson, meanwhile, recalled the strong mother-daughter relationship she enjoyed. “I was always a mama’s baby,” she said. “I’d go and sleep in her bed until I was 15 years old.” (More Jennifer Hudson stories.)
