China-Made Baby Bibs Contain Lead

(Newser) – Tests by a non-profit agency and the NY Times found made-in-China baby bibs sold at Toys "R" Us contaminated with lead, the paper reported today. After its own recent tests, a government agency did not move to recall the bib; Wal-Mart voluntarily removed bibs made by the same company earlier this year.

Tests found levels of lead in the bibs—made of vinyl and selling for around $5—to be three times higher than those allowed in lead paint, but the retailer insists that levels are acceptable under current regulations. A law proposed last year in Congress could ban any lead in products intended for kids.
