Man snagged in police sting draws 10-month suspended sentence

(Newser) – A UK man who confessed to trying to pick up a prostitute for his teenage son has been sentenced to 10 months in prison but won't serve time, the Daily Mail reports. The 42-year-old visited Nottingham's red-light district last year on a quest to help his son, 14,  lose his virginity—but the woman he tried to hire was an undercover cop.

The man’s lawyer said his client felt a “thorough sense of shame”; the judge suspended his sentence because of good character, Reuters reports. But, the judge said, “you have a duty of care to your son, and that is to look after his moral welfare, not, as you might think, to break him in to the ways of sex through a prostitute.”

He replied, "Come on baby, what is it that you do? How much for a proper shag for him?" And then he pointed to his son.

I think it's a shame that police spend so much time and effort to entrap people for victimless crimes. I know! I know! The 14 year was a victim! The exploited women forced into prostitution are victims! I know! I know! Nevertheless, why don't police spend their time and effort trying to entrap violent criminals? For instance, do police routinely go into high crime areas disguised as helpless old ladies vulnerable to purse snatching, to catch those who would prey on such individuals. If they I never hear about it.
