GOP Takes Aim at Obama High Court Noms

Share

(Newser) – Republican groups have already prepared dossiers and attack strategies on a host of possible Obama Supreme Court nominees, the New York Times reports. Ten memos obtained by the Times—all about female judges and scholars—focus on records of abortion rights, gay rights, and the citing of foreign laws. Weakened conservative groups don't expect to defeat Obama's nominee, but hope to galvanize the GOP.

“It’s a massive teaching moment for America,” one fundraiser said. For example, Judge Diane P. Wood supports abortion rights. Judge Sonia Sotomayor allowed a man to sue a corporation for violating his Constitutional rights. Judge Martha Vasquez... denied a death penalty appeal? Well, some hopefuls have conservative opinions too. But the GOP can't "be tempted to be more gentlemanly than Democrats are when a conservative is nominated," said one strategist.

It isn't just about the nominee. It's about the fact that the American people gave control of presidency to a Democrat who will appoint a certain type of judge and the Senate that will most likely rubber stamp that. - Manuel Miranda, GOP activist

But the GOP can't "be tempted to be more gentlemanly than Democrats are when a conservative is nominated," said one strategist. ----Agreed. When a dem pres nominates, the GOP will protest just like the dems do when it's a GOP pres making the nominations. Reply

the GOP was sure to complain regardless of who Obama picked. No rational, moderate judge would have been far enough right for them. Reply

can't "be tempted to be more gentlemanly than Democrats..." Anyone other than a repub would have said 'polite' or 'genteel' rather than 'gentlemanly.' I guess the little ladies like Kaye Hutchinson and Olymopia Snowe need to stand aside, this is a job for the menfolk! Reply

Hell, if Obama nominated Dick Cheney the Republicans would be in his face. (So would the rest of the Country, by the way, but that's not my point here.) The Repugs just want to oppose all -things-Obama. Reply
