Beckham Scores!

Posted Aug 16, 07 3:59 AM CDT in Sports Gossip US    Editor's Choice

(Newser) – Multi-millionaire soccer superstar David Beckham scored his first goal on this side of the pond last night, hammering home a free kick in the 27th minute of the Los Angeles Galaxy's 2-0 win over D.C. United. The giant hoopla that accompanied Becks' arrival in California with his ex-Spice Girls wife, Victoria, had deflated in recent weeks as he cooled his heels on the sidelines with an injured ankle.

The Brit kicker yesterday also booked his first assist on a second goal, a Landon Donovan breakaway, and earned his first US yellow card.  The newly appointed captain played 63 minutes of the game, which drew a crowd of over 17,000. Becks' team next plays Mexican club team Pachuca, shooting for a $1 million purse in the SuperLiga final.
