Palin Shopping Spree OK: Feds

Commission nixes complaint that RNC's $150K in clothing purchases broke law

Share

(Newser) – The Federal Election Commission dismissed today a complaint that the Republican National Committee broke the law when it bought $150,000 in clothes for then-vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, the Anchorage Daily News reports. The FEC said purchases were “coordinated party expenditures” for campaign purposes, and did not violate a ban on using campaign funds for personal expenses as a watchdog group alleged.

This means that the FEC will allow political parties to buy candidates whatever they want at whatever cost, and that the candidates and their families may keep these purchases. - Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington

Not illegal, but certainly stupid to spend 150k on clothing when the economy was collapsing in front of their eyes and they were preaching fiscal responsibility. Reply

Check you timeline Forderon. Clothes by handlers picked by the RNC purchased them before the convention.....close to a month before the collapse.

Carol: The US was in a recession for all of 2008 but the conservatives were either too stupid to know it or were trying to cover it up until the election was over. McCain himself was babbling that the fundamentals of the economy were 'sound'. At the same time, many economists were sounding the alarms that the economy was indeed in a huge amount of trouble.

I know my timeline very well. According to economists, the recession started some time in December 2007. There were even $150B in stimulus checks mailed out that spring. You mean to tell me the Republicans didn't know about this?

Where's the investigation on Chairman Obama's wife wearing $450 sneakers to serve slop at a homeless shelter? Reply
