Girl Talk from Transsexual Sports Columnist

Posted Aug 16, 07 3:16 PM CDT in US Sports Arts & Living

(Newser) – Mike Penner is back in business as a sports writer for the Los Angeles Times, but under a new byline: Christine Daniels. In an interview with NPR, Daniels talks about the decision to come out as a transsexual, the response she got after writing about it in her column in April, and her reception back on the ball field.

The day before the column ran, she confesses, she was so anxious she was "almost in the fetal position." But of the 538 emails she received the next day, only two were antagonistic. Now, old colleagues get "the pronouns right, pretty much," she says, and she can focus on turning herself into a "passable" woman.
