Biden's Big Mouth Irks Obama: Book

Share

(Newser) – The rocky relationship between President Obama and Joe Biden comes under scrutiny in a new book by a Newsweek reporter, Fox News reports. In Renegade: the Making of a President, Richard Wolffe writes that Obama is “distracted by his vice president's indiscipline” and has had to personally rebuke his gaffe-prone No. 2. “He can't keep his mouth shut,” an aide told Wolffe.

The book details a meeting during which Biden joshed Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett after she removed herself from the running for the president’s Illinois senate seat. “You should be in the Senate,” Biden told Jarrett after an astute comment. Wolffe writes that Obama chided Biden, saying, “It’s not funny.” Jarrett denies any ill feeling. “Any suggestion that I was insulted by the vice president's gracious comments regarding my potential for public service is ridiculous,” she told Fox.

I'm still hopeful for Obama- in the long run- but his choice of Biden still gives me pause. It was a chess move, a game-changer. Had he gone with Hillary Clinton, he would have lost, because America wasn't ready to elect BOTH a black man and a woman to high elected office at the same time. I sense that Obama knew that if he didn't go with Hillary, McCain would pick a woman- to his detriment- and he did. Reply

This is what happens when you play expediency. Biden's not without his positives, but for an admin that wants to play 'on message' like it's a fulltime campaign, Joe's an onion in the ointment. Reply

It's your basic Mr. Spock/Dr. McCoy dynamic -- sure Obama raises a laconic Vulcan eyebrow now and then at Biden's loquaciousness, but there's mutual respect. Reply

Much ado about less than nothing-- Biden's strong points more than make up for his human failings. He's been sent on a very important and high profile mission this week and seems to be performing very well. Reply
