Private detectives are investigating a violent British pedophile in the disappearance of toddler Madeleine McCain, reports the Telegraph. Raymond Hewlitt, 64, was living near the Portugal resort where Maddy vanished from her bedroom two years ago while on a family vacation. Hewlitt, a former soldier, has served time for armed assaults on young girls and is a suspect in the killing of a 12-year-old girl. He has been on the run since Maddy vanished.

He's currently wanted by British and Irish police in other cases. Portugal police likely knew that Hewlitt was in the region when Maddy disappeared, but it's not clear if they questioned him. "I've done nothing wrong, nothing, nothing," Hewlitt told the Daily Mail from Germany, where he is being treated for cancer.
