Falwell's Liberty U. Quashes Campus Dems

(Newser) – Jerry Falwell’s conservative Christian Liberty University has suspended the student Democratic Club for supporting candidates “directly contrary to the mission” of the school, the Lynchburg News Advance reports. Virginia Democrats are up in arms. “I urge the leadership of Liberty University to reverse this attack on the liberty of its students,” Gov.Tim Kaine said. A Democratic candidate called the move “deeply troubling.”

“It is even more problematic that the school has decided to continue to recognize the campus Republicans,” the candidate continued. University president Jerry Falwell Jr. tried to put out the fire. “That club still has the right to exist,” he said, though it cannot use the name Liberty University. “They are good, Christian kids who sit with me at ball games. I just hope they find a pro-life family organization to affiliate with.”

The Right Wing nuts strike again. So, I take it this means it's not an American University, it's a Republican Party University and Americans who can actually think for themselves can't attend. No great loss for America, but a hell of loss for the Party of NO. Let's see how they maintain their $$$$$.

I'm Christian. I encourage weighing pro/cons, thinking of outcomes, listening to various points of view. Freedom of press? Speech? Though? YES! I don't think many Christians fit into the reality you are thinking of.

(NEWSER) - The Virginia House of Delegates passed two abortion-related bills yesterday, and the AP isn't mincing words in describing them, or the process, saying the GOP supermajority "muscled [through] two of the most restrictive anti-abortion bills in years." One requires women to have a "transvaginal ultrasound"—which the Virginian-Pilot noted in a scathing editorial earlier this month involves inserting "a condom-covered probe into a woman's vagina to obtain an image"—before undergoing an abortion. The other could essentially outlaw abortions entirely: Del. Bob Marshall's House Bill 1, which passed 66-32, declares that a person's rights begin from the moment sperm meets egg. (NEWSER) - Virginia's Senate has passed a law requiring women to have an ultrasound before they can obtain an abortion in the first of several anti-abortion measures that the state's Republicans—in control of both chambers and the governorship for only the second time since the Civil War—have in the works. The ultrasound exam will determine the age of the fetus. Women who choose not to view the images will be required to sign a statement, reports the Washington Post . New Rules Could Shut Virginia Abortion Clinics

State's Board of Health passes stringent requirements

(NEWSER) - Virginia's Board of Health yesterday passed abortion clinic rules so stringent that critics say they could force most or all 22 of the state's abortion providers to shut down, reports the Virginia Pilot . The rules— approved by state lawmakers earlier this year —are thought to be the strictest in the country and are due to take effect early next year after review by the state attorney general. They treat clinics as hospitals, imposing architectural requirements most will find it impossible to meet, reports the Huffington Post . More»

(AP) - A federal appeals court in Virginia has dismissed two lawsuits that had claimed President Obama's health care overhaul was unconstitutional. The unanimous decision was issued today by a three-judge panel of the 4th US Circuit Court of Appeals.
