Falwell's Liberty U. Quashes Campus Dems

Share

(Newser) – Jerry Falwell’s conservative Christian Liberty University has suspended the student Democratic Club for supporting candidates “directly contrary to the mission” of the school, the Lynchburg News Advance reports. Virginia Democrats are up in arms. “I urge the leadership of Liberty University to reverse this attack on the liberty of its students,” Gov.Tim Kaine said. A Democratic candidate called the move “deeply troubling.”

“It is even more problematic that the school has decided to continue to recognize the campus Republicans,” the candidate continued. University president Jerry Falwell Jr. tried to put out the fire. “That club still has the right to exist,” he said, though it cannot use the name Liberty University. “They are good, Christian kids who sit with me at ball games. I just hope they find a pro-life family organization to affiliate with.”

The platform and policies of the national Democratic Party and the candidates supported by that party, and thus the student organization itself, are inconsistent with the mission of the University. - Mark Hine, Liberty University administrator

Maybe this will force Christians to see that religion and democracy are incompatible. Religion is an authoritarian force, fascist by nature, and against all forms of free speech, free thought and free press. Welcome to reality, everyone. Reply

That has got to be one of the dumbest comments ever posted on the Newser website. Organized religion has been responsible for some heinous crimes in the past, but so have many governments-- is "government" incompatible with democracy? Maybe you're thinking to much, "Thinker."

perfect comment i couldn't agree more. As to the other person responding to you he/she is just dumb. Religion works against the people by a so called dictator which you can take as god, the pope, or just a priest while democracy works with the people (hello elections? who elected god?). Also, as for government being incompatible with democracy in a sense yes. All types of government will take away freedoms and be an authoritarian force but a democracy has the people (who are being ruled) limiting the rule of the government. Religion does not. Religion is the opposite of freedom, it is oppression.

I'm Christian. I encourage weighing pro/cons, thinking of outcomes, listening to various points of view. Freedom of press? Speech? Though? YES! I don't think many Christians fit into the reality you are thinking of.
